Jobfox/Resume Pal is garbage.

Being a recent college graduate and unemployed, I (like many fellow Americans) have been scouring and persistently seeking ways for employers to notice me and allow me to prove my worth as a part of their organization.

I was recently told of jobfox.com (also resumepal.com) and instantly had an uneasy feeling about them when I noticed a “boss is over my shoulders” link.  This link forwards them to Google in order to hide what they are actually doing on the clock.  Granted, I’m no supreme moral being but I also don’t advertise this as a feature.  Moving onward I filled out my profile, uploaded a resume, and was offered a free resume review by an actual “professional”.  I went ahead and agreed to the review and received a reply from my assigned “Resume Expert” (ha ha) Peg Chritz.  Needless to say, I was severely disappointed in the site’s honesty.  Below is my email reply:

Peg,

Thank you for taking the time to look over my submitted resume.  Your first paragraph initially impressed me into thinking that my resume was actually properly reviewed by a human being.  I was actually excited and looking forward to up-front and blunt criticism as this is how I gauge honest feedback.

Continuing your “review” I realized that your critique is, in fact, as worthless and cookie cutter as every single other generic letter sent via the Internet.  Here are my criticisms of where you went wrong (so your programmer nerds can fix such ridiculous database oversights):

You labeled me as a “Landmark Consultant” over and over again in your letter.  Had you actually read my resume you would realize that Landmark is actually a company I interned with last summer.  It is not a position nor is “Landmark Consultant” even a real job position….anywhere.

You also recommended I use a career summary instead of an objective claiming that objectives are mostly for recent graduates.  Again, had you actually looked at my resume you would realize that I graduated with a bachelors of civil engineering this past May.  In case you are unaware, that means May of 2009.  I am a recent graduate.  Just in case you did not notice I again stress that I am a recent graduate.

Your actual criticism is simply “let me polish your experience” which is nothing more than what every single BS monkey offers out there.  Trust me, you cannot beat me when it comes to BS.  Had you read my actual objective you would realize my goal is to get in with an engineering firm.  Engineers are logical and to the point.  Engineers despise candy-coaters unless it’s involving the art of communicating to non-engineer types.

Peg, I strongly suggest you remove the word “expert” from your job title as I feel it is not nearly justified in describing what your feedback and critique contains.  For $400 a pop I would hope you would include actual sincerity instead of a canned letter sent out to everybody on this website.  The sad reality is thousands of suckers will buy into this scam.  My expectations were of an automated selling system but to attempt to mask this with a fake review is disgraceful and dishonest.  I will make sure to post this experience of your “service” and website wherever I can.  The desperation of many job-seekers is not something to exploit especially in the current state of our country.

Regards,
Alex R.

For added fun, I realized her linkedin page was just as, if not more, bland than my resume wording!

Much like my college degree…

Happy 4th of July

July 4, 2008 on 9:32 am | In junk | Comments Off

Every year I try to remind myself of the historical events that lead up to the declaration of independence of the US.  While the holiday is a great time for friends and family to come together, grill food, get drunk, and ignite Chinese-made explosives I make it a personal point to read up some and give some respect to the actual events and meaning behind what happened over 230 years ago.

Being the first generation in my family born in the US I have a deep respect for what this country has given us.  My parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles fought and suffered a great deal to win independence from a corrupt and oppressive government in Cuba–only to be slapped in the face by the very man they supported.  Greed ruined their home even further.

Now in the US one can’t help but see similar corruption and greed.  It kills me to think that the simplest form of human flaws will always continue to ruin a great future for our kids.  Greed will always ruin everything.  Greed for money, religious following, social status, and power is seen everywhere and everywhere I see it I want to run.  Keep your fucking greed assholes.  Keep on ruining the great ideas that allow everyone to be happy.

To those that could care less:  keep on grilling, drinking, and igniting Chinese made explosives.  Try every now and then to read up and ignite some interest in the ideals that allow you to do so.

So C-3PO’s giant penis crashed my macbook…

While “working” today I came across a comment discussing a Star Wars trading card printed in the 70’s that showed C-3PO with a massive unit.  This discussion had a link to Snopes describing it further.  Mixed emotions arose.  Anger toiled within me as I pondered why I have never heard of this until now–this quickly was absorbed by the hilarity of the whole situation.  There exists a printed card of a famous robot’s wang…with a Snopes page glorifying it.   The Internet is truly wonderful.

Upon clicking the link my firefox session quickly came to a halt.  Suddenly finder stopped responding.  I tried pulling up the Force Quit window to realize my keyboard stopped responding!  There I sat with C-3PO’s golden rod delicately displayed on my screen like a court exhibit (with added boxing for those unable to recognize where it should be located).  This robotic Mandingo had singlehandedly ruined my laptop.

Turns out I’m getting the dreaded 0xe0030005 (UNDEFINED) error on this damn thing.  As this laptop’s less than a year old I refused to believe the hard drive was already taking a dump on me.  Fsck did nothing to help me so I proceeded to frantically begin backing up EVERYTHING in single-user mode.  For those not-so-nerdy people this is a very very shitty way to move files–think of it as moving 100 gigs using DOS.  After an adventure in swindling a copy of Leopard and finding that Lima, Peru has ZERO stores with external firewire drives I finally was able to get OS X back up and running until I can get back to the states.

I’m going to hopefully get a new hard drive under warranty despite my initial refusal to believe that’s the problem.  Hell, my Vista partition never even burped through the whole ordeal.  I suppose I’m just fearing and refusing to accept the worst–that the laptop will eventually ruin the new hard drive (with or without the help of an android’s donger).

hi.

Boredom and illness got the best of me so I decided to rehost this domain.  Don’t expect much.
